is my work unique? I've worked hard to become a truth-teller -- to say what's rarely expressed and illuminate that which has only lain in the dark.
Toward that end, I've written BEARDED LADY, a first-person account of living with an adrenal condition that causes excess hair growth as well as obesity, infertility, and male-pattern balding in female sufferers. This isn't a health treatise, however -- it is the story of a life.
That's what I want in my fiction, flash fiction, nonfiction, and performance. I want to surprise you, make you laugh, make you think -- and yes, sometimes even shock you.
I studied creative writing at St. Mary's College of California, where I received my Master's degree in fiction. I've performed my work at events and venues all over San Francisco and the East Bay, including Porchlight, A Storytelling Series, Why There Are Words, The Marsh and Quiet Lightning. I also run On the Cusp, an exploration of the moments that matter.
My work has been published in print and online. You'll find examples of my personal essays at The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, and The Guardian US.
I've been a resident at The Julia and David White Artists' Colony in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, and The MacDowell Colony.
On March 30, I'll be teaching a daylong class on "Writing from the Edge" at Book Passage in Corte Madera, California. Also, from May 12-June 16, I'll be teaching a five-week version of Writing from the Edge at The Writing Salon in Berkeley. Please join us or spread the word!
Make sure to keep up on all the dirt at my personal blog, The Volcano! You can also catch me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!
